Jewel Care
How to care for your jewellery?
Ahilya jewellery is special and hand-crafted. The designs showcase our rich Indian heritage. Here are some tips on how to take care of your Ahilya jewellery pieces:
- Your jewellery should be stored in a dry place away from humidity, moisture, perfumes and extreme temperatures.
- Rings and bracelets should be worn sparingly to avoid damage through impact. Avoid wearing rings when cleaning, gardening or performing sports activities.
- Don´t forget to remove your rings when washing up or showering, as soap particles may become lodged in stone settings and crevices. Soaps can also leave a film over metal and stones, creating a dull appearance.
- Store your jewellery in its own box or pouch to prevent scratching, chipping and entanglement. Ideally, store your jewellery in a soft lined box or pouch. Try to keep pieces apart, so that they don't rub together or tangle up.
- All Ahilya silver is hand polished before sale. Exposed to the atmosphere, all silver is prone to oxidization and consequent tarnishing. Gentle rubbing with a silver cleaning cloth will restore the original brilliance of the surface.
- If you wear your gold plated silver jewellery for significant periods of time, the plating will eventually wear down. To restore its appearance, you can have it re-plated.
- Make sure your jewellery is not in regular contact with hard surfaces, which will scratch or wear down the plating or enamelling.
- Never use detergent, soap, toothpaste etc. to clean your gold plated jewellery.
- When dressing, jewellery should always be put on last as make up, cosmetics and perfumes can cause damage to delicate items.
- All stone jewellery requires extra care and consideration during wearing to protect the setting as well as to safeguard the gemstone it holds.
- Never clean your gold plated jewellery with bleach. Use jewellery cleaner and a soft cloth to clean your Gold plated jewellery. If you do not have jewellery cleaner, you can use toothpaste, mild soap and warm water.
- Always protect your jewellery from sharp blows, scratching, chemicals, sunlight and heat/cold. Never go swimming in your jewellery, chlorine in swimming pools can cause damage.
- Although gold-plated jewellery will not tarnish like silver, it will get dirty with wear and chemicals, lotions, perfumes and moist conditions will corrode it.
- Gold-plated jewellery can be cleaned with warm soapy water and a really soft toothbrush. Then rinse thoroughly & dry well.
- Gold plating may in time slightly fade depending on wear and the amount of care taken.
- To prolong the Gold or Rose gold plating, remove rings, bracelets, etc. when washing hands or using hand sanitizer.
- Avoid your gold plated jewellery coming into contact with perfume or perfumed lotions. The perfume may react with the plating and cause it to wear off.
- Gold plated pieces are delicate jewellery items. Care should be taken when cleaning gold plated jewellery to protect the layer of gold from being worn away.
- Do not use a silver cloth or abrasive compounds i.e. baking soda to clean the Gold plated jewellery.
- To clean Gold plated jewellery, lightly wipe your Gold plated piece with a damp cotton cloth to remove surface dirt or dust. Be sure it is completely dry before storing the jewellery again.
- Our pieces are delicate and we take no responsibility for careless wear or storage. Treat your jewellery with care and it will be around for you to enjoy for a long time! Relax and sparkle!
